Dear Parents/Guardians,
I am writing this letter asking for your help in making our students aware of the importance of safety at railroad crossings. Recently you may have heard that our school district is in the process of trying to get flashing lights and gates installed at a railroad crossing close to Central High School. We are asking your help by speaking with your children about taking precautions when crossing railroad tracks that do not have warning devices.
The crossing we are concerned about is located approximately ˝ mile west of Highway 94 on 2150th Ave., which is just north of the high school. Since this road has been resurfaced from gravel, the traffic on that road has increased significantly. Because of the increased traffic flow and the poor visibility on the north side of that road, we are asking for parents to speak with their children about being extra careful when crossing railroad tracks.
We currently have been in contact with the Illinois Commerce Commission and have submitted an application for that crossing to be considered for warning lights or gates. We have been told that this process can take between three to five years to get approved by the general assembly and have contacted our local legislature for assistance in this matter.
Until warning lights or gates can be installed, we are asking for your help in reminding students of the importance of slowing down and checking for oncoming traffic before crossing railroad intersections. You help in this matter will help make the roads safer for our students to travel.
Sincerely,
Martin Cook, Superintendent Central CUSD # 3 |
